How to create a Macro in Microsoft Word

Tip of the week how to create a macro

How to create a Macro in Microsoft Word:

What is a macro?  A macro is a series of commands and instructions that you group together as a single command to accomplish a task automatically.  This is a great tool to automate the formatting of a system report into a printable format in Microsoft Word.  Fiserv Premier® reports are often on the system as .prn files and do not print correctly unless they are formatted properly.  Creating a macro can automate the process of formatting the report for you so it’s easier to read.

  1. Open the report file in Microsoft Word:
    • Note: If the report file is automatically opening in Notepad, right click on the report file and select Open with Microsoft Word
  2. Click on the View tab and Select Macro > New Macro:
    • Enter in a Name for the Macro and click OK to start recording
  3. Click on the Home tab:
    • Click Select > Select All
    • Change Font Size > Type in 7
  4. Click on the Layout tab:
    • Select Margins > Custom margins enter .25 for top, bottom, left, right
    • Select Orientation > Landscape
  5. Click on the View tab:
    • Click Macro > Stop Recording
  6. The Macro can be used anytime a report is not in a printable format:
    • Click on the View tab
    • Select Macros > View Macros
    • Select the Macro you created and click Run
